What Can You Do or Call About a Person Move and Left About Dozen Cat With on One to Feed

DEAR JOAN: I often walk my dog and we became friendly with my neighbor's cats. They told us their names were Midnight and Mocha. They are both dog friendly and would rub against my dog. Both cats lived outdoors and would stay on their property.

Recently I saw my neighbors loading a U-Haul truck and asked them if they were moving and they said yes. A week later I found the cats abandoned and hungry, meowing, and the house was empty. They didn't take the cats!

I started feeding the cats. They never leave the neighbor's property and are very friendly. Finally the landlord showed up and someone started taking in the mail that was left in the mailbox. They also threw the water dish and feeding dispenser into the bush.

I'm afraid the landlord believes if the cats are not fed they will simply leave. I'm also afraid the landlord will object to me feeding these cats. Any suggestions?

Rebecca, Fremont

DEAR REBECCA: First off, your former neighbors are despicable people to move and leave their cats behind. It's one thing if the cats had been feral or strays that they were just feeding and didn't have ownership of — not that abandoning those types of cats is an honorable thing to do either — but to leave their pets behind to fend for themselves is just really deplorable.

I'm fairly sure the landlord isn't going to want the cats hanging around on his property and so in failing to discourage them by getting rid of their food and water dishes, his next step likely will be to trap them and take them to the animal shelter.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. If the cats are as friendly as you say, they'll likely find new homes.

If that doesn't sit right with you and you don't mind getting further involved, you should begin feeding the cats on your property and trying to encourage them to move next door. They already are friendly with you and your dog, so they could be happy living in your yard or in your house.

If you don't want to take on that responsibility, contact a cat rescue group in your area and see if they can trap and rehome them. If they haven't been neutered, they should be.

DEAR JOAN: My husband thinks I'm losing it, but I swear one of the crows that hangs around our house is telling me "hello" every morning when I'm out walking the dogs.

We pass under a large oak tree and the bird usually is sitting up there. One morning I just said "Hello Mr. Crow," and he said "Hello" back to me. I thought I must have just heard something else, but the next day, same thing.

My husband says crows can't talk and it must be someone's myna bird that has escaped, someone playing a joke on me, or that I've lost my marbles.

Can crows talk?

Elizabeth L., Concord

DEAR ELIZABETH: Tell you husband to cancel the visit from the psychiatrist. Crows most definitely can speak.

Several members of the corvid family, including crows and ravens, have the ability to mimic sounds, including speech. It's more common among crows that have been raised by humans and those in zoos that have close and almost constant contact with us, but some wild crows can pick up on it, too.
